WOMEN IN COMPUTATION
2019
Poster for the seminar „Women in Computation“ by Ariana Dongus and Prof. Dr. Matteo Pasquinelli
in collaboration with Barney McCann and Moritz Schottmüller
The seminar examined the history of feminist theory in relation to information technology in the 20th century. An emphasis was placed on the vital yet often overlooked role women played in the development of computer technologies, examples of which can be found from the industrial revolution to WWII and the development of the first mainframe computer ENIAC in the United States. The exhibition represents the result of a collective research project aimed at “writing women back into the history of computation they were always part of” (Jennifer S. Light).
Moritz Schottmüller and I were asked to design a poster that included some of the reference material used in the course. We collaborated with artist and programmer Barney McCann who used his “computer’s handwriting” algorithm to generate the glyphs seen on the poster.
